The ThinkPad Models

The ThinkPad Models

There are several ThinkPad models, each of which has a slightly different architecture. Several of the models are not suited for running Linux. The ones you are most likely to meet are:

ThinkPad 340
Monochrome-only machine with a 486SLC processor clocked at 50 MHz (i.e., non-Intel). It comes with disks of 200-360 Mb capacity, depending on the precise model. David N Turner reports a successful installation of Slackware 2.3.0 on a 340CSE with 12 Mb memory and 200 Mb hard disk. He also warns us that it has the same floppy disk change problem as the 750 series machines (see below). Specifying
ramdisk floppy=thinkpad
at the bootdisk prompt gets around the problem.

Ps/Note E35
Jerome Kaidor reports that he has made Linux 1.2.0 run on his Ps/Note E35, which he thinks is essentially a ThinkPad 350 (whatever that may be) without PCMCIA slots. He managed to squeeze everything he needed into 21 Mb, even with X installed!

ThinkPad 360
This model has options based around the 486DX2 at 50 MHz. There are disk options between 340 and 810 Mb, and dual-scan colour and active-matrix colour screens. The "mouse" is IBM's Trackpoint device, located amongst the G, H and B keys. Linux is happy on this model (reported by Richard Soderberg, for example).

Cognos 8 BI 8.1.1 Software Environments

Product documentation
Abstract
All versions stated of an environment presume the initial release of a 3rd party product without any need for patches/service packs or equivalent terms unless stated. Equally, unless stated, we presume that the product has not been configured to disable new features (compatibility modes) and that all patches/service packs are upward compatible for our products.

The software environments listed are applicable to those environments configured to use the Latin 1 code page only. All Cognos products are 32-bit, with the exception of Cognos TM1 64-bit. Cognos products will integrate with 3rd party 32-bit libraries only. All references to Windows refer to Windows on x86 Architecture.

Software environments for Cognos 8 are listed as either active, compatible or not supported. Environments denoted as active are the environments tested by Cognos. Although environments denoted as compatible may also be tested, testing may be limited or support may be based on upward compatibility statements from Cognos partners and third-party vendors. Older releases of environments may transition from active to compatible over time as significant testing would have occurred in previous Cognos releases.

IBM System Blue Gene/P Solution - Expanding the limits of breakthrough science
Overview Press Featured topics Applications Literature

The IBM® Blue Gene®/P Solution is a follow-on product to the successful Blue Gene/L Solution, and adheres to the original key design points set forth in the Blue Gene/L Solution. Specifically, the Blue Gene family of supercomputers has been designed to deliver ultrascale performance within a standard programming environment while delivering efficiencies in power, cooling and floor-space consumption. Blue Gene/P extends the performance through density and frequency bump, 4-way SMP enhanced functionality, scalability for petaflop performance, and aggressive power management for low power consumption first established with the Blue Gene Solution.

Many universities and government research labs have deployed Blue Gene for computational studies in weapons research, radio astronomy, protein folding, climate research, cosmology, and drug development.

Blue Gene customers note that time-to-solution for many applications has been reduced by orders of magnitude. Scientists can make new runs more often allowing them to explore alternative models and approaches to problems. Blue Gene is making a demonstrable change in the way science can be done.

Blue Gene/P delivers more than ultrascalable performance. Because of unique design points that allow dense packaging of processors, memory and interconnects, Blue Gene/P offers efficiency in the areas of power, cooling, and floor space consumption.

Available in configurations ranging from one to 256 racks, Blue Gene/P is the innovative new solution from IBM to further expand the limits of breakthrough science without sacrificing efficiency.

The challenge: Managing data for business advantage

In an increasingly demanding and competitive business landscape, effective data management is essential to the success of the enterprise. Data availability from any location gives employees, partners and customers the up-to-the-minute information they need to work productively, make timely decisions and meet business goals. Information technology professionals facing these challenges are under pressure to deliver more capacity and at higher levels of service. Yet critical resources—staffing, budget, power, cooling and floor space—are often constrained.

These demands call for enterprise-class storage systems with the flexibility to support changing IT requirements, accommodate continuous data growth, satisfy application-level service requirements and unify SAN and NAS infrastructures with the expectation of reducing overall costs.

The solution: IBM System Storage N7000 series

The IBM System Storage™ N7000 series systems are intended to help IT organizations tackle the challenge of effective data management using virtualization technology and a unified storage architecture. The N7000 series is designed to deliver high-end enterprise storage and data management value with midrange affordability. Built-in enterprise serviceability and manageability features help support your efforts to increase reliability, simplify and unify storage infrastructure and maintenance, and deliver exceptional economy.

The N7000 series, like all N series systems, provides powerful virtualization and thin-provisioning capabilities designed to maximize storage utilization and staff productivity while minimizing the use of power, cooling and floor space. Staff productivity can be enhanced by an integrated suite of application-aware manageability software that can provide policy-based automation to otherwise manual tasks.

The IBM N7000 series is designed to provide remarkable versatility by unifying FC SAN, iSCSI SAN, NAS, primary, nearline and regulatory compliance data retention and archival storage in a single integrated architecture. N series systems are designed for easy installation, configuration, management and expansion. The combination of versatility and simplicity of N series systems is intended to help IT professionals respond quickly to changing business needs.

The N7000 series combines the benefits of a unified storage architecture suite of application-aware software with massive scalability, which is intended to provide an ideal platform for large-scale data center applications and storage consolidations.
